Hello, welcome to St Malachy’s Special Needs. My role is to support children who have learning difficulties. I sometimes withdraw children from class for individual lessons, or as part of a small group. I also support class teachers when children are not withdrawn from class. I also work with outside agencies, for example the Educational Psychologist.
Mornings are dedicated to our early intervention programme. Children from P2 or P3 who are experiencing difficulties in literacy are selected for this programme. Each child receives individual daily lessons lasting for 30 minutes for a period of approximately 20 weeks. The first 10 minutes of each lesson consists of reading familiar books for enjoyment, fluency and practising ‘tricky’ words. The following 10 minute period focuses on letter work, word work and writing. The last 10 minutes focus on reading a new book, practising new skills and enjoying a new story.
Older children can be withdrawn individually or as part of a small group. Each child is assessed and an educational plan is devised. Each plan is reviewed each term and discussed with parents.
A range of resources is used, the main one being a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books to match the ability and interests of each child.
If you would like to discuss any concerns please contact me.
